A Trip to The Fantastic Umbrella Factory

Some Cool Garden Art

I think we counted 22 ducklings in this Mama's care. I seem to remember this type of duck being very good at fostering babies of other ducks, so maybe they were not all hers.

Feeding goats and emus. Does the emu's eye look very much like a great white shark's eye? It actually bit Vi right after I took the picture. She was o.k., although a little understandably freaked out.

Going Home
When Steve went to his school to get his books last week, we all came along so we could visit The Fantastic Umbrella Factory, in Charleston, R.I., which is not a factory at all and has nothing to do with umbrellas. What it is, is an amazing place, filled with gardens, cool shops, an art gallery, a vegetarian place to eat, and animals who live there and that you can feed. The shops are all in very awesome old barns and are filled with beautiful clothes, bags, jewelry, drums, pottery, music, soaps and lotions, and more and more. There is a greenhouse with tons of beautiful and many exotic plants, and the property is beautiful to walk around, with lovely gardens, fountains and ponds and also lots of sweet animals roaming about.

The girls loved the animals the best. For just a little bit of money you can fill a couple ice cream cones with food for either goats or chickens/ducks. The girls loved the ducks and chickens the most, were a little terrified by the emus, and absolutely in love with the ducklings, who were too cute for words.

This place is definitely a destination, it is pretty far out in the country, but the drive is beautiful and it is such a peaceful and cool place to spend an afternoon. And it's a great place to take cute pictures of your kids too!

I used to go to The Umbrella factory a couple times a year with friends. There was a time most of my clothes came from here, and I used to always but the coolest gifts here too. But I haven't been in ages, I think the last time I came was the summer Pen turned one. Penelope is already asking to go back, and I think we will plan another ride out there soon. Now with kids along for the trip it's not so much about browsing the shops, but more about running around the grounds, feeding animals, and taking in the beauty and interesting things around us, which is more my thing these days anyhow.

Healing

It has been over three weeks since I posted anything here. Some people know by now, most didn't even know we were expecting a baby yet, but we lost the sweet baby boy we had hoped to meet in the fall just over three weeks ago.

It was a huge ordeal, with me ending up in the hospital for five days total. It was very hard on all of us, in lots of ways, but now we are healing, slowly but surely. Physically I am doing much better, Steve went back to school this week, leaving me alone with the girls for the first time. It went well, I am still being gentle with myself and taking it easy, but we are getting back to our usual routine. I am beyond thankful to be here with these people I love more than anything. Although I am heartbroken over the loss of this baby, more than I ever imagined possible, I am overjoyed to be here to mother my beautiful girls, to hold them in my arms and love them. I am so thankful to Steve for taking such good care of us all while I wasn't able to do it, and I'm so happy to still be with him on this journey we started together, this crazy, wild, beautiful life we are living.

These pictures are from the day we said goodbye to our baby. We planted some flowers in our garden, flowers that will come up every year and bloom beautifully at just about the time we will be remembering him. It felt so good to get my hands in the cool, damp dirt, to have all of us together working on the same thing, beginning to let our sad hearts heal. Penelope was amazing, dressing up beautifully and with a special hat too, all on her own. She was very involved in all the planting and watering. Violet was darling and oblivious to what we were really doing, only happy to dig in the dirt with her shovel and her family around her doing the same. And later that same day we went to the beach for a dinner picnic. I mostly sat on the sand and watched my happy, wild girls racing and shouting on the beach. It was wonderful for me to see them being so in the moment, just being alive and crazy and joyful. I am trying very hard to learn from them about being in the moment and not to dwell on what is already past. I have my moments of sadness and grief, and my moments of wonderful happiness, and really, that's life, isn't it? If you are lucky, that is. There is always sadness and grief, but if you are lucky there is wonderful happiness, people you love more than you can ever say, and people who love you back just as much. I am so very lucky, my wise four year old told me so. "Don't be too sad Mama, you are very lucky. Some mamas only have one child, some don't have any, you have two little girls to love" She is completely right, and I remind myself of her words every day. I am very lucky, very loved, and very happy to be here, living exactly the life I want to be living.

Some Easter Pictures

Penelope and Pig in their matching Easter dresses.

Brunch Outside

Happy uncle and niece sharing cupcakes on the couch.
These pictures are a bit late going up, but they are so cute. We had a relaxed Easter at our house. The girls got their baskets early, not much candy in them. They each got a tiny chocolate (or chockie, as Vi calls it) bunny, which they devoured immediately, and 2 packs of Annie's Bunnies. The rest of their treats were play-doh, bubbles, and a stuffed animal.

They had new dresses for Easter, they really didn't need Easter dresses, we weren't going anywhere, but while out searching for rain boots a while back we discovered matching dresses for the girls, and the one in Penelope's size had a tiny dress that came with it, just the right size for Pig. They weren't expensive, and sometimes you just have to do these things. Pig has been wearing her Easter dress ever since she put it on for the egg hunt, she loves it that much.

Charles came over in time for an egg hunt. The eggs had jelly beans and hair bows in them, and everyone had fun finding all the eggs. It was warm enough to eat brunch outside after the egg hunt, and after brunch Tom showed up. We all just relaxed while Violet and Steve napped. We watched a movie together, and when everyone was up we had dinner together and cupcakes. A simple, peaceful day.

How We Celebrated the First Day of Spring

Our Fire
Though it was a while back now, we celebrated the first day of spring so nicely. The girls and I went to Mount Hope Farm, and Penelope rode her bike. It is a great place for new bike riders because there is a paved and mostly even road, but no cars.

We spotted skunk cabbage, pussy willow, chives, burdock, and many other green things. The girls were fascinated by the water bugs who could scoot around on top of the water and watched them for a long time. We found a snake who was so beautiful, she stayed still for so long to let us get a really good look at her. She eventually swam away in the stream, and then Penelope found another one. We caught the second snake and all got to feel her skin and look really closely at her. We let her go, and Violet was terrified when she slithered away close to her feet. Penelope, on the other hand, wanted to hold the snake and was completely unafraid.

We had a picnic snack by the pond, we brought oranges and we read The Sun Egg by Elsa Beskow. It's a sweet book about an elf who finds a "sun egg" which is really an orange that a little boy had dropped while walking through the forest. Later, while Violet napped, Penelope and I painted some wooden eggs, and Pen made one into a sun egg.

When Steve came home we all ate dinner outside and then had a fire to welcome the new season.
