Violet in the Violets

This sweet baby of mine, playing in the violets she was named after. She really is the sweetest thing.

Some Easter Pictures

Brunch Outside

Happy uncle and niece sharing cupcakes on the couch.
These pictures are a bit late going up, but they are so cute. We had a relaxed Easter at our house. The girls got their baskets early, not much candy in them. They each got a tiny chocolate (or chockie, as Vi calls it) bunny, which they devoured immediately, and 2 packs of Annie's Bunnies. The rest of their treats were play-doh, bubbles, and a stuffed animal.

They had new dresses for Easter, they really didn't need Easter dresses, we weren't going anywhere, but while out searching for rain boots a while back we discovered matching dresses for the girls, and the one in Penelope's size had a tiny dress that came with it, just the right size for Pig. They weren't expensive, and sometimes you just have to do these things. Pig has been wearing her Easter dress ever since she put it on for the egg hunt, she loves it that much.

Charles came over in time for an egg hunt. The eggs had jelly beans and hair bows in them, and everyone had fun finding all the eggs. It was warm enough to eat brunch outside after the egg hunt, and after brunch Tom showed up. We all just relaxed while Violet and Steve napped. We watched a movie together, and when everyone was up we had dinner together and cupcakes. A simple, peaceful day.

How We Celebrated the First Day of Spring

Our Fire
Though it was a while back now, we celebrated the first day of spring so nicely. The girls and I went to Mount Hope Farm, and Penelope rode her bike. It is a great place for new bike riders because there is a paved and mostly even road, but no cars.

We spotted skunk cabbage, pussy willow, chives, burdock, and many other green things. The girls were fascinated by the water bugs who could scoot around on top of the water and watched them for a long time. We found a snake who was so beautiful, she stayed still for so long to let us get a really good look at her. She eventually swam away in the stream, and then Penelope found another one. We caught the second snake and all got to feel her skin and look really closely at her. We let her go, and Violet was terrified when she slithered away close to her feet. Penelope, on the other hand, wanted to hold the snake and was completely unafraid.

We had a picnic snack by the pond, we brought oranges and we read The Sun Egg by Elsa Beskow. It's a sweet book about an elf who finds a "sun egg" which is really an orange that a little boy had dropped while walking through the forest. Later, while Violet napped, Penelope and I painted some wooden eggs, and Pen made one into a sun egg.

When Steve came home we all ate dinner outside and then had a fire to welcome the new season.
